Hey! Welcome to watchmojo.com, I am your Melissa, and today is Saint Jean Baptist in Quebec.
It is a holiday which honors the French patron saint of French Canada. It was a popular event in France that was brought to North America by the first French colonies.
It was celebrated for the first time in 1638. In Lower Canada, the day took on a patriotic tone in 1834 when Lugard Duverne and some associates where in Montreal attending the St. Patrick’s Day Festival. They thought it would be a good idea to have something organized for them selves.
In 1908, Pope Pius X designated John the Baptist as the Patron Saint of the French Canadian nation. After the Quiet Revolution, the day actually took on the pelugal edge that is because the younger generation starts rejecting the religious symbolism.
In 1968, a riot broke out at the St. John Baptist parade. In attendance was the new Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. He was filmed by the CBC refusing to take cover from the grandstands even though rocks and balls are being thrown at him. The next day, his liberal party won the majority of the votes.
And in 1977 under the government of Rene Levesque, June 24th was made the official holiday of Quebec.
