My name is Ryan Myshrall of the rock group, Top Brass, and I am here today to explain the functions of the electric bass guitar. So, what I am holding is mid-priced 1987 Steinberger XP electric bass. It's a four string model, as any standard bass is and it is tuned E, A, D, G. This particular model is a little different because it has no head stock.
Normally, it would have a nice fancy head stock and you would tune it up, but this one has a special system, invented by Mr. Ned Steinberger whereas you tune it from the back, you turn this knob and it pulls the string into the bracket and you can also purchase five and six and even seven string basses.
The difference between a four string bass and a five string bass is, the five string has either another low B string which will give you a much heavier register; it's just of much lower frequency and lot of guys, lot of people use that for New R&B and funk music and lot of heavy metal and stuff.
