If you've been wondering why you feel so bad, but you have been to the doctor and everything is normal, what's going on? Well, there is more than one possible cause, or one strong possibility is poor thyroid function.
But the doctor checked that, my thyroid is normal he said. Well, normal thyroid blood levels do not mean you have normal thyroid hormone function. To understand how this can be, you need to understand some basic things about thyroid hormones, where they come from and how they work.
The first one we need to discuss is TSH, which stands for Thyroid Stimulating Hormone and it's produced by the pituitary gland in the brain. TSH stimulates the thyroid gland to produce the hormone known as T4 which is inactive thyroid hormone. T4 in turn is converted to the active form of thyroid hormone known as T3 in the liver. T3 then circulates in the blood to the cells of the body and communicate to its special receptor sites on those cells. The receptor sites in turn relay chemical messages from the T3 hormone to stimulate the production of mitochondria in the cells.
Mitochondria are energy factories that burn calories from food, to produce energy for cellular functions. Interference anywhere in the process of thyroid hormone function or if the cells are unable for some reason to produce additional mitochondria, the result will be that the body cannot burn calories effectively and cannot produce enough energy to carry out cellular functions.
This results in weight gain, fatigue, depression and chronic aches and pains. Other symptoms may also include, dry skin, hair and nails, thinning hair, a sensitivity to cold, and cold hands and feet. These symptoms can all occur with perfectly normal thyroid blood test. Thyroid hormone function can be impaired by poor conversion in the liver. Thyroid receptor sites on the cells can be interfered with by excess estrogen, and estrogen like chemicals from plastics, pesticides and other toxins.
Mitochondrial production can be interfered with by various chemicals a common one is Sodium Benzoate which is often found in soft drinks, even diet soft drinks.
