The most simple act we can take in helping our environment is probably also the most powerful, we must cut back our consumption of natural resources. If there is a theme to go green, it is not to be wasteful and to conserve energy. The fact is that the human population is outgrowing the current supply of fresh water. Water for whatever reasons seems to be a very easy thing for all of us to waste or just using the wrong way. The truth is we do not realize how we are affecting the environment negatively by wasting water.
In the given day of this planet, the average person uses up to 183 gallons of water for daily living. That is for drinking, cooking, washing, flushing and watering our gardens and lawns. At the same time, it is estimated that normal and efficient household use of water could save 31% of that or 57 gallons a day per person.
So, what are the things we can do in our homes to ensure that we are not wasting water. The first steps we can take are simple. Make sure the faucets are shut off and not dripping when not in use. That there are no leaks in your pipes but there are few other tips and some information that will help you be mindful of water waste.
One is the use of your shower and bath. Now bathers are wonderful but clearly less energy efficient than a shower. Unfortunately showers account for up to 40% of hot water energy cost. But what can we do about this?
Well, you can install low flow shower heads and if you do this all with putting aerators on the kitchen and bathroom faucets, you can reduce your hot water usage by up to 50% and that in turn, always your fill bill.
Jim Stewart, co-founder of Earth Day Alliance has been working on resource conservation long before it became part of our social conscience. Jim, let us start with the water. What can we do to reduce our amount of water waste at home?
Jim Stewart: You should have a low flow shower head. You should have little diffusers on all the faucets. You should be limiting your showers as brief as possible, 3-4 minutes is the mostly ecologically friendly. Everytime you run your dishwasher, you have a full load and the same way with your washing machine.
Andrew Kupersmith: So in order to save water, remember these things. Turn the faucets off completely and make sure that there are no drips. Check for any leaky pipes. Put diffusers on your kitchen and bathroom faucets. Take shorter showers and baths 3-4 minutes is optimal and always run your dishwasher and washer or dryer with full loads.
Now there are more advance things you can do to reduce your water waste. Like the use of grey water or recycled water for your appliances and we will get to those later but for now, take these first steps to heart. Get the little things and make your impact now. I am Andrew, go green.
