Check out this awesome arachnid. You can tell because they have eight legs just like spiders, ticks and mites. Insects only have six legs. This is a female from West Africa. She’s an emperor scorpion, one of the world’s largest species of scorpions. There are over 15 hundred species of scorpions that live just about everywhere around the world except in Antarctica.
You might be concerned about those big claws and that huge steider? That’s right. Scorpions are venomous. Well, I’ll let you know a little secret -- the bigger the scorpion, the better. In other words, the less toxic their venom will be so, but it’s the little ones that can really sting you. Well, these creatures __ wait from stinging, in fact have a better way of killing their prey. What they do is use those big claws to rip it off and just pull it in their mouth.
Even though they’re venomous and toxic, she can still sting and it feels like a bee sting. Oh, it’s crawling. And she can still bite and pinch, and she pinched me already and men, did it hurt. Their pinches are so strong. They can snap a pencil right in half. She has these weird extra claws that come out of her mouth like an alien. She can use them to clean her bigger claws, and also she can use them to chop up her food and then gulp it down. In a while, they’re mostly termites. I feed this on crickets. They also like a nice treat of baby mice and lizards.
Now they’ve been around since way before the dinosaurs. Four hundred million years. They don’t have bones on the inside of their body. They have exoskeleton. That just means their skeleton is on the outside and it’s basically an armor. Exoskeletons are cool! I’m OK.
When they have babies, they ride on the mother’s back until either they get old enough to be on their own, or until the mother eats them.
What’s that smell? They poop out this weird pink slime right out of behind their sting, like right in that yellow area right there. Oh, and she just twitched so you can’t really see it now. It’s pretty gross when she does that.
