Learn About the Smart One Spacecraft
Launched in September 2003, Smart One has used solar Energy and its ion electric engine to reach its destination—the moon’s orbit.
Smart One is a technology featuring new types of Science instruments and new ways of Space Craft Operations. Its success is a pre cursor for ESA’s next generation inters planetary missions. The European Space Agency Smart-1 Mission to the moon is at a crucial or dangerous stage. Smart-1 is Europe’s first mission to the moon and Wyco of the Apollo Missions over 30 years ago the moon is taken a much lower priority in space exploration so why I have seen the vision to it now.
The side is one to test the theory that the moon is actually a piece of debris throwing out after another planet collided with earth millions of years ago. Between 1969 and 1973 six Apollo Missions collected 382 kilograms of material from each surface. Water Medics Soviet Low to Missions sampled three locations from 1970 to 1976.
But all these samples were collected from areas close to the moons equator and on the side of the moon visible to the earth. The instruments on board Smart- 1 will look at the moon from a orbit and develop a global understanding of what is on its surface without having to land and collect samples.
Just as important as the moon mission is Smart 1’s role in developing key technologies for features space exploration. The philosophy is small it fits into a key just one meter across and wire is less than 370 kilos. Six people can carry it quite comfortably. Its proportion is insured by solar energy.
Smart -1 is the first inter planet or space craft to rely entirely on solar energy to go into deep space. Smart- 1 also carries a novel navigation system called OBAN. OBAN a noble space craft to calculate for itself exactly where it is in space, the question now is can Smart-1 get from one place to another without having to be told by ground control.
