This episode ThreadBanger brought you by cotton new online exclusive fashion show Inseam.
Caroline Hwang: Hey, ThreadBanger welcome to my studio. We are currently in Clinton Hill Brooklyn. My name is Caroline Hwang and I paint and something for living. I use to watch my grandmother knit and crochet all the time. I think that is kind of what inspired me. First time, I realize I can do this for living. I am not—I am so not sure.
I think going into school, I thought I know what I wanted to do, but it kind of completely changed. I went urgently on there for a commercial illustration which I am doing somewhat of now, but it is not my main goal.
One of the first projects that I did in the school was I started sewing together with my painting. If I am sewing aspect, relaxing yes, but I think I use it kind of as duality because inventory is a little bit more melon and coli and dark and I want to kind of want to draw the people with the convert.
So this is one of my pieces. These pieces are put together by English paper piecing which are then sewn on the fabric by applique and then this embroidery coating is called Sashiko coating, a Japanese form of coating.
So today, I am going to show you how to do English paper piecing. The first thing you want to do is cut out a pentagon. You can pretty much cut out any shape, but I am using a pentagon today. Then the next thing yo want to do is cut out your piece of fabric with the quarter inch the same allowance on all side. And after that is pen your paper to your fabric. Center it as close as possible. You are going to fold in two sides of it to make sure that the corners are sewing it in as neatly as possible.
Take you threaded needle. You know you do not have to knot at the end. So each side, each corner you wanted just two one stitch and you are going to repeat all the way around. You can use any kind of fabric for this cotton coating fabric or any recyclable materials or clothes. At this time, I just take up the pen because it is pretty well lender. And then you will get to your last corner and once again, you do not have to knot it because it pretty well lender.
There you have your first piece. So you are going to do that as many times as you want. So the next thing you want to do is you take your two pieces to sew them together. You are going to put them face to face. Once your sides are together, you want to make a web stitch very close to the edge. The reason why you want to make at the very edges so that you do not really see much of the thread once it is really opened up. Then once you web stitch the edge together, you open that up and it stitch together.
In order to attach more pentagons to this—to the one that you have already sewed on especially like a corner like this, you would pretty much do the same thing as you would put the facing size together. So we are going to do this edge first and then this edge.
You have that edge sewed together and then you will notice that this edge is not sewed together. So the next part we are going to do is sew this edge together. And what you will do is just kind of fold it. It is going to be kind of junkie, but it is okay to fold your piece of paper because it is just possible and you web stitch that edge together. And so you have your three pieces sewed together.
Now that you have your finished fabric, you want to take the paper out. And the next step is to put it onto your fabric. Wherever that you wanted to lie, you would do the basic apple K technique, apple K to your fabric.
Most of pieces that are large like this go for between $18,000 to $22,000. If it is larger usually, you know sold it for more, but it is very time consuming thing. This certain piece was taken the couple of months because of all the coating in it and it can take anybody from months to years to make a full coat. It is probably why you will see coats ranging between $600 to $5000.
