Okay, so what I got here is a regular cloth for cleaning guitar. They sometimes come free with certain guitars in the pack but you can use what you like. I will use the sock but sometimes use the towel, all sorts of things. In some people, you might notice they put like a hair band around which will help with some sort of dampening. But for the purpose of this, I am going to use this cloth. And so what I do is I am going to wrap that around like that. I am going to tie it on there and then that will help us out with the muting.
So now, when we play the exercise, we can still concentrate on the muting but this is going to help the notes to ring out and really help us to harmonizing on this technique. Hopefully that is coming out nice and even and as I have said before, you can start with the other note. And then you can start on the third note. In that way, you will start to develop the string to each finger and then the lick will start to sound very even.
So I am just going to just show you – and you can use this for anything that you want with the techniques. You will find that the more you use it, take it off, go back to the regular way you are playing and eventually, it will start to come together. So what are we going to do now is a lick. Because this is not much of a musical statement on the side but when we start to use it in a little bit – but I am just going to show you another lick that is going to work when we have this dumping on here. We are going to do this same lick that we did so far. We are going to put that first finger up a string so it is going to go 4, 5, 7 and then we are going to slam this first finger on to the 4th fret G string.
And then once you get good at that, you can start to run up two pair of strings. So now we are taking the cloth off. Let us just have a look at the lick that we went up a pair of string. Now what I am going to do to help me along here is just pick the first of each group of three. I hope that this time, they sound nice and smooth. Now if you remember the other lick that we did, what I am going to do now is I am going to adjust the picking on this slowly. I am going to pick the first finger to keep me going and then after that, I am going to pick this fourth fret on the G string. I am just going to leave that to that ninth fret. Now that we got this technique and that we can work three notes on one string, the best thing to do is to try to learn some shapes where we can start to use it. So if we are going to play like a sort of regular rock type group, which I am going to have a backing track running in a couple of minutes, I am going to show you, if we take what we call a scale we discussed so in the other DVD’s.
Now this scale fits most if you have things in the key of some major things as well. But what I am going to do is I am going to adjust the shape of this scale to really help us with this legato technique. So this is the position that we are going to do even though I am saying that you are going to start on G for convenience of position. But, what I normally do when I play this scale is I will hit an A first. So let us just look at the scale position. It is going to go 3, 5, 7 on the lower E, and it is going to go to 3, 5, 7 on the A. It is going to go 4, 5, 7 on the D, 4, 5, 7 on the G, we are going to jump up and go 3, 5, 7 on the B and then 3, 5, 7 on the high E.
So as I said before, what I normally do is hit on the A and then I will just come straight back down. Now, with the scale shape like this, what I will do is probably be fairly random the amount of time I play on each string. That is the beauty of this technique. So what you can do is you can play twice on the string and then four times on the string once on the string depending on what you want to do. What I did there was a combination of four’s and two’s and one’s. Now we got this scale position. Now, for going up using the legato technique, what I am going to do is discuss coming down. So what I am going to do now is set pull offs. We will start at the top on the 7th fret so we are just going to pick that 7t
