The general rule for Youth League Baseball is that there are no head first slides into any base. The basic slide that we will demonstrate and we will teach is the regular square, sit down, stand up slide. We demonstrate this by a simple walk through procedure.
We have each player face the coach, place the bat in his hands, above his head.
Why do we use a bat?
You could use a glove, anything, to train the player to keep his hands above his head, so that there is no risk of injury or damage to his wrist, his fingers, or any part of his hand that could be damaged by him sliding and putting his hands down.
As his hands are above, we will count to three and on the count to three. He will form the figure forward with his legs and just sit down.
Ready, begin. One, two, three, slide.

Get up again. Ready, begin. One, two, three, slide.
[Demonstration]
Very good! That a boy!
Get your hands up higher. Let us go. Ready, begin. One, two, three.
[Demonstration]
In this position, we teach this position as you can see. His hands are above his head, there is no damage to his knuckles. His hands are closed. His foot is tucked under his leg, so that there is no injury to the ankle. His knee is up so he does not jam his knee. We have his heel in this position so that on an overthrow. He can pop up and go home.
Now, we do without the bat.
Begin. One, two, three.
[Demonstration]
This sliding technique can be used whether you are sliding at the second, third, or home, and when done properly, it is the best to not risk injury.
