Hi! I am Tomas Sbertoli, Director of Snow Sports, here at Wintergreen Resort in Virginia. Today we’re going to teach you the basics of Skiing. What we’re going to cover today in this segment is an introduction to skiing, introduction to the equipments, the movements on the flat, and we will teach you how to gently glide down the hill and start using a wedge to control your speed and then take that wedge into wedge turn. Some of the other things we are going to discuss are the seven points and the responsibility code, the code that all skiers should know and adhere to when they are out on the slope skiing to keep yourself and the others around you safe. Some of the basic equipment you’ll need to get started skiing are ski boots, poles and skis.
All of these pieces of equipment are important to moving down the hill. Some of the more important step for you personally is eye protection, some skin protection from the sun, so that you’re eyes and your skin don't get too heat up while you are out here playing. Safety in skiing is one of the most important aspects. We always have to be aware of where we are and what is going on. We will discuss the seven responsibility codes as we progress through the lessons but it is important for you to remember, always start slow and respect your ability. Don't try and get too far and over your head where you can find yourself in dangerous situations, dangers to yourself as well as others around you.
Before we get started, let me tell you a little bit about myself. I am a Level Three Certified PSIA Instructor with over 20 years teaching experience. I taught in places like Crested Butte, Sun Valley and now here at Wintergreen. Alright, let's hit the slope.
