Danny Grady: Now, let's try our last chord, E Major. It has the same shape as A minor, just step a string, 2nd finger is on the 2nd fret of the 5th string, 3rd finger is going to be on the 2nd fret of the 4th string and your 1st finger is going to go on the 1st fret of the 3rd string, so let's try that with the thumb, index, middle, ring, middle, index, same pattern.
And then just bring the shape down back to A minor, now you are going to change, do the same pattern with your first three fingers and now your thumb has the 5th string open as the bass note. So, let's put it all together. Start off with the A minor pattern twice, switch to D minor and now your bass note is on the 4th string. Switch to E Major, bass note is now on the 6th string, back to A minor one more time. Again, A minor, D minor and change your bass note, first three fingers stay the same. E Major, bass is on the 6th string now, A minor and that's the instruction of Fingerpicking.
Giles Martin: Hi! This is Giles Martin, here at Abbey Road Studio 2 talking about Blackbird. Blackbird was recorded for 'The White Album' on Tuesday, 11th June, 1968 in this room here.
Danny Grady: So, I will start out with my 3rd finger here on the 6th string, 3rd fret and with my thumb, I am going to pluck the 6th string.
Giles Martin: It's a cool thing to play as when you are playing it, it will -- you forget that it's actually a song, you think it's a guitar playing.
