Danny Grady: Right now we are going to take a look at some basic hammer-on technique. Hammer-ons, if you never done it before, they give you a different sound that just picking, picking a fret straight through. Here I will show you an example of three note frets.
I picked all three notes and now if you use hammer-ons, it gives you a different sound in picking and that sound can either be more fluid or more aggressive depending on how you use it. But for most of us the main advantage of doing hammer-ons is let's say use our fret hand speed to its best advantage. So we can play faster than if were picking every single note.
So let's try some basic hammer-on technique. Now if you have never done hammer-on, but for the best place you learn them is at the first position where we are using open strings and so let's just pick the third string open and then we are going to hammer-on the second fret, we use our first finger. So pick the third string open and then after you have done picking it, just take the tip of your first finger and hammer-on down as hard as you can on to the second fret here.
You want to make sure you are using the very tip of your finger and two things that might be able to give you in advance, the first time you try. You want to pick pretty hard. You want to get the string really, really vibrating and if you have an electric guitar, using a little bit of distortion, will give you some extra sustain so you can make your first couple of tips successful.
So let's try that. Again, open to the second fret and use your first finger. Then hammer-on with the very tip of your finger. Let's try with second finger. Again, the very tip, pick hard and then you are going to want to try your third finger.
Giles Martin: Hi! This is Giles Martin on there Abbey Road Studio Two, talking about paperback writer. Now paperback writer is a landmark recording for number of reasons. But mainly because it was the first time that the English, the Brits are managed to work out base frequencies. I will be hitting on beats one two and then on the end of three, hitting again and then on four, adding the fourth finger.
