This is introduction to harmonics. Harmonics on the guitar is the sound that you made by just gently touching the string at a certain point along the length of the string and it gives you a nice chimey tone like that. It's an actual specific note. Now apart from sounding unique on the guitar which is part of their appeal, these are also specific notes.
So you can combine them like you could any other specific note to create chords. You can use them in your main parts and another great use of harmonics is for secondary guitar parts where you want to embellish what the other guy is playing it sound a little bit more richer. Just making it sound little more trick when you combine the parts.
So let's try harmonics for the first time and we will take a look at the basic technique involved and then we will try and come up with a harmonic chord progression here. So let's try the harmonic here, the 12th fret of the sixth string. What you want to do is you want to take a fleshy part of your finger.
I am going to be using my second finger but feel free to use any of your fingers and you want to get proficient of doing harmonics with all of your fingers, but I am going to start with my second finger here and I am going to just kind of hold it on the string, just barely touch the string here at the 12th fret over the fret itself.
Now when you actually fret, I know you definitely want to fret behind the fret. But when you do a harmonic, it's different in nature. Actually, just touching the string directly over the fret itself. So just barely touch the string directly over the fret itself, then you are going to want to pick pretty hard.
So that starts with a slide from the fourth fret to the fifth fret of the second string. You can use your third finger. Then the open first string and so for harmonics what you want to do is just take your finger, the third finger across the 12th fret right on top of the fret itself and you are actually not pushing the strings down.
