You have probably heard a guitar soloist with the lead soloist, it sounds like he is playing single note, something fairly uncomplicated, but there is just a little bit of something extra to it and it's that high pitched overtone, that high pitched harmonic that's going along with the picked note. My students will often ask me how does he get it to squeal like that. Well, now the secret behind the squeal is something called Pinch Harmonics and if you have never done that before, we will go over the basic technique used to execute Pinch Harmonics. Then we will come up with some strategies to make it a little bit easier for you to do it the first time and then I will show you a leg, which you can practise to do your Pinch Harmonics.
Now, the basic gist of it is, is you are taking your thumb here on your picking hand and you are bringing it a little bit closer to the tip of the pick, so that this part of your thumb is rubbing along the string at the same time that you are picking, creating a harmonic effect. If you remember harmonics so when we barely touch the string at a given point well, that's effectively what you are doing here. The fleshy part of your thumb here is effectively touching the string at the same time that it's picking and if you pick in different parts of the string, you will get different overtones.
Now some players like to memorise where each overtone occurs over each note, but myself, I prefer the kind of the chaotic nature of this and just let the overtones happen the way they need to happen. But just know that your instrument has a specific overtones that it will give you if you pick certain notes in certain places. It is something that you can memorise and develop a feel for.
Hi, I am Jeff Carlisi and I am back with you to kind of take apart, hold on loosely and give you some of the -- give you the road map on how the song is put together. The intro starts on the seventh fret just basically using the one and the five, the B-note and the F-sharp.
