Often times a student will come in after they have seen one of their favorite guitar players play, either on television or live in concert. They will ask me what's that shaking thing that they do with the notes and they immediately want to knew it. The shaking thing is Vibrato and it serves two purpose that we are going to learn about today.
The first is to make the note sustained to the practical usage of it. By vibrating the note you can make the sustainable and normally when if you just hit normally and then another usage is to make certain notes stand out or sound different from those that don't have vibrato on, which is another way we are going to utilize it today. It's a real quick and easy way to make a certain note, just have a little bit different inflection on it than the standard notes that you play.
So we will also going to learn three different types of vibrato today. We are going to learn to do a vibrato with our first finger, a vibrato with again, third finger and then we are going to learn how to bend and do vibrato at the same time. The technique to do vibrato is very similar to bending and that you have this point right here where your first finger comes in contact with the bottom of the neck and then you are rotating your wrist to the right or to the left, kind of rolling it against that point and that's the key technique.
But unlike bending you are not going to be fluctuating the notes much higher than the original pitch. The straight definition of vibrato is a rapid fluctuation between two pitches but this technique that we are going to learn, you are not really going to go too far from the main note.
So take your first finger and put it on the third fret of the fifth string. Pick that note and then just kind of roll back and forth against this point right here on your first finger and like all things you might want to start out pretty slowly.
So you start out here with your third finger, your second finger whatever you will feel comfortable with here on the fifth fret of the top string. You are going to hit that twice and give as much vibratos as you can. You are going to come at the third fret, do the same exact looking pattern, hit it twice.
