Quarter-step bends
Tutorial: Part 2
You see just underneath, I will play the half step target note here for you, here on the ninth fret of the second string. It's just before that. If you hit that note, you know you have gone too far. Then I am going to take my third finger at the apex of the bend, once I get to the top of the bend, I am going to take my third finger and place it here on the ninth fret of the third string and pick that note to resolve it.
So I have this nice tension here for just getting the note, just out of pitch, it gets resolved by that nice ninth fret on the third string with your third finger.
Let's try it up here at the fourteenth fret. So take your second finger, I am going to put it here on the thirteenth fret of the second string. Again, your first finger is going to meet at the string above the bend, and your thumb is going to be up top here for leverage. Just push it slightly out of tune, and then bring your third finger up to the fourteenth fret of the third string to resolve. So create that nice tension, just out of pitch, and then resolve it. That's quarter-step bends.
You are going to start out here with your third finger, your second finger, whatever you feel comfortable with, here on the fifth fret of the top string. You are going to hit that twice and give it as much vibrato as you can. You are going to come to the third fret, do the same exact thing, hit it twice.
