Learn to Play Piano – Part 2 – Nate Bosch
Not only did we name the notes in the C scale, so I’m backtracking a little bit, but you can also number
the notes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and then you’re back to the root again. So when you build a chord on the
root note we call that the C major chord or the one chord. When we built on the F, that is the fourth in
the scale so we call the 4/4 and when we move up one more note, the five chord. So when you hear
things like the 1-4-5 progression or those kinds of things, that’s what they’re referring to. The one chord,
a four chord, and a five chord.
Now there are a lot of popular songs that used just those three chords. So we’ve played the scale, we
built some chords, we’ve added a left hand, let’s just put it together in real simple little song and there
you have it in meeting about five, six, seven minutes, you’re playing the piano. Play that really slow C, C,
F, C and play another C, G, C. And you can start to use different patterns, different—double the notes in
the left hand or if that’s too tough you can just hold that and.
Now we’ve been playing solid chords there but you can break these chords up to. So there you have
basic chording built around the C scale, we built some chords, and we learn the scale.
Now the next thing to do when creating a little song is well, you sing one hearing chord which is very
nice, that does really give me a melody. Well that’s where really understanding the notes in that scale,
that’s where you can create a melody. So we’re going to create a little melody just using the notes in
that scale. Let’s start by just playing the root in our left hand. So when we play the C we’re playing the C
in our left hand the F chord, the F in the left hand, and the G chord, the G. So let’s just start by playing
the root in the left hand, here we go. So what did I do there? Well simply played the notes that I found
in the chord based on that root. So here’s the C, we play this little melody here, it’s just basically me
alternating the notes on that C major and then we went to the F, of those two notes the F and E are
both found in that F chord and then I went back to the C where both the E and the G are found in that
chord. Now when we get to the G chord, play the G in the left hand that’s a B, a little bit of a jump there
back to the C. So you get very simple little song that was a little quick, I’ll slow it right down for you.
So there you have it we started by looking at the keyboard and wondering where do I start, then we
started with the middle C, we learned the scale, the C major scale, we built chords C chord, F chord, the
G chord, learn what the root was, the base of the chord we added our left hand and then made a little
song. And as you get more comfortable and you start to learn all the concepts that have to go with
understanding the different scales cause I mean scales can start on any different note you won’t go
there just yet but as you start to build that up you can build melodies and create your own music.
