Learn a Slide Guitar Lesson in Open E
Alright in this lesson we’re gonna talk about the open E tuning for slide guitar, and what you can do in an open E tuning. The open, the E chord is gonna be located right at the 12th fret, all strings across. That is your E chord, so from that E chord you can do many types blues and rock licks. So there are going to be located right on the 12th and 10th fret, you could have a… so one key thing in slides is muting the strings. So each time you gonna go with a back forth motion with your thumb and your first finger. Your thumb plays a note. First finger mutes the B string, or whatever string below it. So, we’re gonna, we’re gonna lick, first finger, play the G string, thumb mutes the D string, keep hopping. And what that is, is called a rake with your thumb, where you gonna rake the strings and then attack the note. So you go… slow. Slide, rake and then hit with your first finger. So let’s do some licks, using that 10th and 12th fret, the rake, and let’s just put some of those together. So we have… open E tuning 12th fret on the G string is your major third, major note. Your 11th fret is your minor note. So in a blues progression there in the E chord, you got… major… and you also gonna have the blues scale located right on the 11th fret here, so you got, blues scale. You can also move it up, and cut it off with your hand. And you can also do two strings at one, like I did before using your first and second finger on the 15th fret is a cool lick. So this, that is a 5th and a flat 7th, you’re hitting at the same time. You can also get back and forth between them with your thumb and your first finger. And also the vibrato we’re gonna use, you can do, I’ve been using heavy vibrato, I like to take maybe just one index finger off, sometimes both of them. You can get really wide vibrato. There’s a good tip when you’re doing your doing this kind of licks is to adjust your slide to the string you’re playing on. If you’re playing on the small E string, you don’t wanna have the slide all the way across all the strings, it makes no sense. An easier way to do it, you’re gonna hear the note better and you’ll get less clips like this, is to put the string, slide right, right above the string you’re playing. So let’s try a few more licks doing. Slide is all about playing less licks and more emotion feeling and melody. You have to have melody, so if I was playing a blues progression using all these styles I would come up with something really easy. Let’s just say a blues, we have… That concludes this lesson about open E slide tuning. Look for more lessons like this at johwaynemusic.com. Thanks a lot.
