Warrior Women, where did they come from? Somebody left a comment asking where the term Amazon came from and how the Amazon River got its name and do request, so I am going to tell you about it.
According to Greek History or Greek Mythology, there was a group of women warriors known as the amazons and they have all sorts of stories about them and arts renderings of them at war. According to Greek writing, the rite of passage for an amazon woman was to get her right breast cut off or burned off. Part of the reason why that was, because they use bow and arrows, so when they bring back their bow, they did not want their sting to hit their right breast.
The traditional Greek explanation of the word amazon comes from two words, the first word being “A” meaning “Without” and the second word being “Mazos” which is a Greek word for breast. So it literally meant without a breast. So that was the tradition explanation for the word amazon.
However, it is probably not correct, probably more likely comes from an Iranian word which was “ha-mazon” which literally meant warrior. So one of the main reasons why the first explanation of the word amazon is contested is because that all Greek statutes and paintings, the amazons have both breasts.
So, you might ask yourself, how did the Amazon River gets its name because the Amazon River is in South America. And the amazons were in Europe?
Originally, the Amazon River was, it is named, Rio Santa Maria De Lemar Dulce—it is a good thing that they renamed it because when anybody would like to talk about it, it would take a long time.
The Rio Santa Maria De Lemar Dulce was renamed to the Amazon River in 1541 by an explorer because he had encountered a tribe of warriors where the women were fighting along with the men, so women warrior-amazons, he renamed the river the Amazon River.
Women warriors where popularized by shows such as Wonder Woman who is actually an amazon and Xena, the warrior prices, so it is like comic inventions and stuff like that, it is quite common to see girls or women walking around in warrior costumes.
