The seeds of Indian Civilization were planted around 2500 BC in the Indus Valley centered in the cities of Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro. The Indus Valley civilization lasted for nearly a thousand years.

Around 1500 BC, a people called the Aryans migrated to Northern India developing a society with a complex Cast System that survives up to this day.

From the roots of Aryan religious beliefs emerged two of the world’s major religions, Hinduism and Buddhism. The period of the Gupta Empire from 320-540 AD has been called India’s Golden Age, a time of great accomplishments and literature, the arts, astronomy and mathematics.

Indian merchants spread the use of the decimal numbering system created by Hindu Mathematicians. Classical Indian literature written in Sanskrit included religious writings such as the Vedas and Upanishads as well as poem—
