This video of bartending lesson is brought to you by American Bartender School. From one of its simulated cocktail lounge classrooms where students all learn by doing, just like on the job training. And in only one or two weeks, they can be fully trained and ready to work as professional bartenders and take advantage of the many full and part time job opportunities available.
The drink that I’d like to show you now is calked a Black Russian. And a Black Russian is a very popular drink. So what we’re going to do is we’re going to make this on the rocks and we’re going to use a rock glass and we’re going to fill up our rock glass with ice cubes.
Then what we’re going to use is one and a half ounces of our vodka, and notice that I'm using a jigger which is a type of measuring instrument. It’s got two measurements on it, this one particularly have a one ounce on one side and an ounce and a half on the other side. And you want to be sure to always measure your liqueurs when you're making a cocktail because this way, they will always taste consistent. So we’re going to use one and a half ounces of our vodka, here we go. And then what we’re going to use is a half ounce of Kahlua. Now Kahlua is a coffee-based liqueur and whenever you hear the word liqueur, it means that it’s a sweet liquor, yes.
So, what they do when they produce this is they add a grain neutral spirit for the alcoholic content and then they're going to flavor it with a mixture of coffee ingredients, and we’re going to use a half ounce. And there we go. Now notice that I poured the Kahlua liqueur on top and what it’s doing now, it’s floating down and mixing with the vodka so it has a consistent taste. Now it’s important when you're making drinks that you always want to put the heavier liqueur on top so it mixes, because let’s say that we put the Kahlua on the bottom and then we put the vodka on top, then we’d have a very sweet coffee flavor on the bottom, it’s great vodka on the top.
