This is Leslie, welcome to WatchMojo.com. Today we are going to be talking about Black Sabbath. It's funning to be doing a Fun Facts with Leslie segment on Black Sabbath because Black Sabbath isn't exactly what you would associate with fun, they are dark. Frankly, I don't like to play them with the lights off; they are a little bit scary. But I am going to tell you something interesting about Black Sabbath.
Black Sabbath was formed in the 70s and most people associate them with Ozzy Osbourne. But they also included three other members including Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward. And they originally started off as a Blues group. And what makes Black Sabbath really, really interesting is that a lot of people consider them to be pioneers in the sort of like darkened and Gothic end. But really their signature sound came valid as a result of a simple accident.
In mid 70s, Tony who is their guitarist went shopping for some sort of sheet metal and injured his fingers. Now as a result, he wasn't able to play the same way. He had injured his fretting fingers and the only way he was able to adapt and still continue to play the guitar was to tune it differently.
So suddenly instead of playing the songs in the usual E, he was playing the songs in a C#(sharp). The bassist thought that they weren't out of tune, had to retune his guitar and there you go, that's how the Black Sabbath sound was born.
Black Sabbath disbanded in the late 70s, I mean you can blame Ozzy Osbourne but many members of the band were doing LSD on a regular basis and that's no way to continue producing music.
But in recent years they have had a resurgence, Ozzy has obviously done very well in reality television but he has also done well with his Ozzfest tour. And in the past couple of years, Ozzy has headlined his own Ozzfest tour and he has ended it by inviting the original members of Black Sabbath up on stage with him, to close out the concert.
So whether or not they are going to have another album coming out, we don't particularly know, they have been rumblings about it for years. Ozzy says, 'he doesn't really think so because he doesn't know if they can match the original success'. Some of the other members do want it. So we'll have to wait and see but your Fun Fact for this week is the signature sound, well it was just an accident, bye.
