Learn about Camera Exposure

Hello, I’m Peter Barge from ephotozine.TV. I’m just gonna show you a small tip now that will help you improve your metering when you’re taking a photograph. Just a simple set up here, camera pointing on a subject, I’m gonna take a meter reading with my itech viewfinder. The meter reading is one tenth of a second the F5.6. So, I’m now gonna take the shot with my eye at the viewfinder, you can see the result here. Now, I’m gonna take the same shot with my eye not against the viewfinder. Now when you got a camera on a tripod, it’s likely you might do that, you look through the viewfinder, get everything set up. You move away and then you take the shot. Now look at the difference. The reason for this is light goes through the viewfinder and affects the exposure meter. The exposure meter thinks it’s brighter than it actually is. So it will underexpose the picture as you can see here. In the old days, camera manufacturer used to have a blind, some of the pro models still do. If your camera doesn’t have a blind on your viewfinder and you’re moving away from the camera, just cover your hand over it like that, and you’ll get the same result.
