John Rogers: Hi I’m John.
YuQing Zhao: And I’m YuQing.
John Rogers: And we are here once again in our continuing series of videos on Chinese
furniture. Today we are talking about the next two most commonly use
woods in Chinese furniture they were called that there were three woods
that were originally use most frequently throughout the country side, elm,
poplar and Cyprus. In our other video we talked about elm, today we are
going to talk about poplar and Cyprus. Behind me is a poplar table,
YuQing why don’t you talk about the characteristic of poplar as wood.
YuQing Zhao: Sure, this outer table was stain in dark black color before that from the
faded part we can tell this is a poplar wood because poplar is type of wood
that it doesn’t have predominant wood grain, it looks like just a one flat
piece of wood with no grain order with grain so tense you cannot tell that
much again this is the softer wood is lighter than the elm as well.
John Rogers: And the other thing that I were just add to that is this Chinese poplar is
unlike American poplar and that it does not have the greenish ash to with
and so much American poplar has. The next piece we are going to talk
about is Cyprus and YuQing would you please tell us the predominant
characteristics of Cyprus.
YuQing Zhao: Cyprus wood is soft wood again, softer than elm lighter weight as well.
Form wood grain its looks similar to elm but not quite, it has the wood
grain that you know looks to me they’re like layers and one layer is find
higher than the other. It’s more like mountain map and you can see from
the center point is the highest and a little lower know just circle by circle
and Cyprus has a long knots and this is typical character that it has on you
can tell this is not elm.
John Rogers: To me when you look at Cyprus it resembles American pine very close to
them. So, this concludes our series on the wood use in Chinese antique
furniture, elm, poplar and Cyprus. Thank you so much for watching and
be sure to see our other videos.
YuQing Zhao: Thank you.
