Welcome to watchmojo.com. I am your host Melissa and today is Christmas. Now, December 25th celebrates the birth of Christ. But overtime has become the most significant economic time of the year. And it was during the middle ages that Christmas actually gained popularity.
Now, the word Christmas actually comes from both the old and new English contraction of the word Christ-mass. Now, as may all of us already do, we shorten the word Christmas to Xmas. This is because the Roman letter X actually resembles the Greek letter X and in Greek, the word for Christ is Christós.
Christmas has become a combination of Christian ceremonies celebrating the birth of Christ in various secular traditions influenced by winter festivals, such as Yule and Saturnalia. Overtime, we have come to integrate other traditions which have become very familiar to us like Christmas tree, singing Christmas carols, exchanging gifts and cards and, of course, waiting for the big guy himself jolly St. Nick.
So, from all of us here at watchmojo.com, Merry Christmas!
