Host: What should I do if there is a mistake on my credit report?

Vikki Frank: When you first noticed there’s a mistake on your credit report maybe a lender let you know that there was information on there and you’ve never heard of that account before. You want to go annualcreditreports.com and get your free credit education credit report. This will allow you to see specifically the information that’s on your credit report as it reported, and enable you to dispute any inaccurate information with the credit bureau that that report is coming from.

The credit education report that you receive will actually have a section on it that explains you and gives you different options. Generally the best way though is to write a short letter that explains that this information is incorrect and could they please remove the information. And there are examples of letters all over the website, and I think that actually each of the credit bureaus on myfico.com also offers suggestions and examples of letters.

The other way is that if you have a mistake with a creditor that you’re currently still have an active relationship with. Let’s say you have a credit card and they’re telling you that you pay back you’ve been late one month or that your balance isn’t what you thought it was. That is really good to call that creditor directly and to find out if they are able to update the information.
