Male Speaker: What's cryotherapy?
Male Speaker: Cryotherapy in the field of podiatry is the use of a freeze that is actually placed directly on top of the painful area such as the nerve or on the plantar fascia which is giving them pain. The treatment is very simple, very easy. It's usually performed in outpatient phases where we just use local anesthesia. We know what the area, the patient points the exact area that hurts them. We use the cryoprobe freeze in that area for about six minutes and the area gets numb and the pain basically is resolved for a long period of time.
Male Speaker: What types of problems can you treat with Cryo?
Male Speaker: We could usually treat heel pain that is not responsive to cortisone injections or the pinch nerves like we call neuromas, or certain scars or certain fibromas or plantar fibromas or even certain benign nerve tumors can be treated with cryotherapy.
Male Speaker: So, talking about the heel, you have a bone spur. What is a bone spur?
Male Speaker: When people walk a certain way and the plantar fascia or the muscles are overstrained, it causes a traction or pulling of the muscles in the bottom of the heel or in back of the heel. Over a period of time this constant pulling irritates the bone and that develops what we call a heel spur. Most of the times it's treated very conservatively with physical therapy, sometimes an injection, and stretching exercises, and occasionally you may need the cryotherapy to help it become less painful and most of the time actually a response to orthotics just a pressure away from the painful heel.
