Learn about Desert Plants

With little rain fall and average summer temperature over a hundred ten degrees, desert plants must be extremely hardy to survive. Hi I’m Veronica Hill of California Travel Tips here at the Living Dessert Botanical Garden in Palm Desert let’s take a look at a common desert plants and learn a little bit more about desert landscaping. Palm spring is known for its tidy landscape dessert gardens and I can’t think of a better place to get new ideas and inspiration at the living dessert. This peaceful and beautiful park is known for its showcase gardens of plants that grow in the Mojave, Colorado, Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts. Walking along the gentle paths you’ll find specimens of barrel cactus, agave and yakka, turn the corner and you’ll find mallows, chorea’s and prickly pears. Many of these plants can go long period without water in the scorching desert heat. Here you’ll also find desert trees such as the Joshua tree, muskeet tree and an askartment live oak. My guide Glenn, explained that one of the most under rated desert plants is the fragrant Creosote Bush; it is used for healing by native Indian and as shelter by the desert animal. One of my favorite parts about the Living Desert is this desert oasis which is one of the few remaining oasis garden in the region. If you want to grow a humming bird garden or a butterfly garden you’ll find some great ideas here and proof that they work. At the Wortz Demonstration Garden you’ll find some great examples of south west landscape design, complete with beautiful examples of gates, stone work, water features and rustic yard art. On your way out, step by the Palo Verde Garden Center you can purchase a wide variety of unique cacti succulents and other desert plants not found else spring state.
