Efficient, Effective, Coaching Methods and Strategies
Hello and welcome to Football Done Right an interactive coaching website done for
coaches by coaches. My name is Coach Matt Stern today we’re going to talk about
Footwork Progression. I’ll start off by individually showing the drills and then at the very
end we’ll piece them all together to show the flow and progression of how this drill is
actually used.
Player one will start off in front of the four-bag set up. These bags are set up one yard
apart from each other so it will flow through. Player one is going to start off with a single
step in between each bag and finish off by sprinting five yards. Player one ready, set, go!
[Player one demonstrating] Single step, good, flow it through. Now player one wants to
keep his body nice and upright going through a run motion flowing through and then
when he finishes of the last bag it will explode and sprint through five yards.
Player one will reset. He’ll be facing me. He’s going to lateral step placing two feet in
between each bag. When he finishes of the last bag, he’s going to explode through 5
yards. Player one ready, set, go! [Player one demonstrating] Body upright and explode,
good, good, good. Excellent! Player one will reset and we’re going through a punch drill.
Punch drill is used for cut block when players come in low towards your feet. We want to
get our hands down and feet back punching each bag. Now as he explodes off the third
bag he’s going to explode forward dipping his inside shoulder and ripping through five
yards. I’m going to position the cone so this player knows where to explode through.
In punch drill, player one is going to keep his feet shoulder width apart driving his hands
down into the bag. He’s going to punch one bag, two bag, three bags. Tip his inside
shoulder and finish through five yards. Player one ready, set, go. [Player one
demonstrating] Good feet working, independently drive it down, break it through,
excellent. Excellent job!
Now we’ll show the progression as one whole. Player one will single step. When he
finishes off the fourth bag, he’s going to change direction lateral step. When it gets down
here he’s going to change direction, he’s going to punch, punch, punch and finish through
five. Player one ready, set, go! [Player one demonstrating] Single step lateral steps,
punch, punch, punch; get out, excellent, excellent job!
In part two of the footwork progression player one is going to double step placing two
feet in between each bag, explode off the last bag sprinting through five yards. Player one
ready, set, go! [Player one demonstrating] Double step, double step, excellent. Player
one kept his body nice and upright elbows bent at 90 degrees bringing his hand ear to
pocket got to develop quick feet.
Next drill, player one will hop, he’s going to keep his feet shoulder width apart. He’s
going to have a bend in his knee and his hip he’s going to explode driving his hands up in
the air hoping to get in the passing lanes— quarter back passing lanes. Player one ready,
set, go! [Player one demonstrating] Good, you want to stress body control here, good,
good!
The next drill player one is going to be going through cut block progression. Cut blocking
is something the offenses do to get players on the ground to get run lanes. Player one is
going to bring his hands down, get his feet back going to a sprawling motion. He’s going
to sprawl shuffle, sprawl shuffle, sprawl shuffle. Dip and rip and splint through 5 yards.
Player one ready, set, go! [Player one demonstrating] Sprawl shuffle, sprawl shuffle, feet
back, explode, run, run, run. Excellent, excellent!
He’s going to come down, double stepping through each bag. He’s going to settle his
feet. Change direction hop through three bags and then he’s going to— off the last bag
he’s going to cut block drill. Hands down, feet back full sprawl shuffle, full sprawl
shuffle. Off the third bag he’s going to explode and sprint through five yards. Player one
ready, set, go! [Player one demonstrating] Double step, double step, double step, hop,
body control, head up, hands up, head up and down. Cut block, down, cut block, dip and
rip. There you go, excellent!
Next in the progression player one is going to just sprint and back pedal. What we want
to stress here is change of direction so he wants to explode out of the sprint break down
his feet and settle in to his back pedal. When he gets out of his back pedal at the end of
the bag, he wants to explode through a sprint. He’s going to continue to do the
progression through the bags and explode through 5 yards off the last bag. Player one
ready, set, go! [Player one demonstrating] Chest is up changing direction of your feet,
changing direction of your feet and exploding off the back.
Next drill player one is going to shuffle, shuffle, through the bags. We call this drill
shuffle, shuffle. He’s going to have his feet starting off shoulder width apart. He’s going
to move laterally through the bags consistently breaking down his feet and changing
direction. We never want to bring our feet together. We want to chop our feet
consistently and change direction. I stress in this drill we want to chop our feet. We don’t
want to stop them, so chop them don’t step them.
Player one ready, off the last bag you will explode and sprint through 5 yards, set, go!
[Player one demonstrating] Good change direction, change direction, change direction,
explode. Now we’re going to put the entire progression together. Player one is going to
sprint back pedal through the bags. When he gets to the end bag he’s going to change
direction chop his feet and continue right into a shuffle. He’s going to shuffle through the
bags, again, feet working independently. When he gets to the last bag he’s going to
explode and sprint through five yards.
Player one ready, set, go! Good. Shuffle, shuffle, chop them don’t stop. There you go
through and do a shuffle and do a shuffle off the last bag sprint excellent!
