Members of Green Day, still didn't get good reviews from the media and the public. They went on tour in 2002 with 'Blink 182' and of course, although, so many people were saying that the band maybe falling apart, the media proved otherwise.
After the tour, they decided to take a break, go home to their families and during this break, they really had to consider what they were going to do with themselves with the future. A lot of things had changed in their lives over the past 12, 13 years and a lot of issues had developed amongst the members themselves. They had a lot of arguments, long talks and discussions about these issues that they had to strain out. They went back to the studio, recorded about 12 tracks and then all the master tapes got stolen.
The album was rumored to be called 'Cigarettes & Valentines' but they decided not to rerecord those songs or try to recreate them and just create completely new songs and do better than they did the last time. Now, with this, they came out with 'American Idiot' in 2004. It debuted to the number one spot in the album sales for Billboard Charts which was also their first number one album.
They also had number one hits all over and they released three singles including of course, 'American Idiot', 'Holiday' and 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams.' Now, this album was a little different than their older albums. The media claimed that it was more mature and musically as well, not just lyrics and they clearly were not afraid to talk about their own opinions on the album. Much of the album was about the US Government, how things are being run, how it's effecting the citizens and of course, how against they were against all of these things; even though they were and still are American Citizens themselves.
This album did allow the guys to get a Grammy Award in 2005 and also let them to have five of the Grammy nominations. They played two shows in England and they used these concerts as a music used to release for the CD and home DVD called 'Bullet in a Bible' which was released in 2005. Their total album sales are up to 53.1 million worldwide which includes over 10 albums that have been released to date.
Green Day got the name for the band when they were watching 'Sesame Street.' Believe it or not. They were still involved, they were watching it and one of the characters Ernie used the term Green Day so it kind of became an inside joke between the members.
