Marc Summers: A year round favorite for all ages is gum balls but around
Halloween we always come with the shock in the center so let’
creep behind the scene to an earth what’s hiding inside some of
this special juice. Nothing is fun as blowing gum but when it
comes to Halloween there is an extra twist to this treat. You can
grab gum balls that look like eye balls. Orange pumpkins
containing crunchy seeds, filled with the blood like liquid. Yup,
around October gum can get a little gross some.
Leigh Nykoliation: Scary treat certainly appeal to kids, anything that perhaps even
mom and dad would be a little bit unsure of kids just jump right in
and the more glow and the more guts and the more glory the better.
Marc Summers: Double Bubble has been making gum balls for over 50 years and
Halloween has always been an important Holiday.
Leigh Nykoliation: Halloween is our number one selling season. We get pretty excited
about Halloween around here. Gum balls are very popular in
Halloween. It’s an affordable indulgence for kids that’s easily pass
out.
Marc Summers: But just because gum balls are a timeless favorite, it doesn’t mean
they can’t get a little updated. Modern machine remains gum balls
can be more elaborate filled with secret flavors or covered with
grounded pictures. All this gum balls start out the same however as
masses of plain gum mixture, sugars, starches and little gum pellets
are all mash together into a gum ball base. The sticky stuff is
makes up stain and squeeze in the long ribbons of yummy gum. A
system of formers works the ribbons at the round balls. The great
gum is now ready to get these stinktive decorations.
The gum balls are put in the panning machines were coloring and
flavoring are scope to an end, scope it around. Then the gum balls
are given a finishing turning in polishing panders.
Leigh Nykoliation: Because that’s when you get that great shiny coating on the outside
that makes our gum balls looks so pretty.
Marc Summers: Now, some of the gum balls are ready for that last terrifying touch.
A trip through a gum printing press that puts on a scary face or an
eke eye.
Leigh Nykoliation: And its stand by large print rollers that actually press a black food
coloring on top of the white gum ball.
Marc Summers: Okay, so that’s how they make the outside looks so spooky but
what about the insides? Beneath there colorful exteriors these gum
balls are hiding a sweet surprise that just pumpkin red blood. But
how do they get that stuff inside? Double Bubble is in telling.
Leigh Nykoliation: Everyone would love to know the surprise on the inside of our gum
balls but that’s a part of our trick. It’s a trade secret and we won’t
tell you.
Marc Summers: They may not tell but here’s a hint of how it happens. When the
gum excess being squeeze out, special nozzles actually forms a
small circle inside the larger outer circle eventually becomes the
surprise center. And why go to all this trouble to make a true
Double Bubble?
Leigh Nykoliation: I think the insides of the gum balls are very important but we know
kids they want to get underneath everything so they bite through
the exterior and there is a wonderful surprise inside.
