Correction: The first rap video to be aired on MTV was Blondie's Rapture. It could be argued that Rapture is not a true rap song, but it's no rip-off either. There is little doubt that Blondie playing homage to the '70s NYC rappers and b-boys. The genre had a strong following even then, and MTV had a strong bias against black artists in the early years. It's really sad that so many people think rap started in the mid-80s, because some of the best rap was made during the previous ten years.

In 1984, Run-DMC's Rock Box is the first rap video to be aired on MTV and soon enters the channels on regular rotation. In 1985, Run-DMC is the first rap group to be invited on to American Bandstand, a show hosted by Dick Clark. In 1996 Run-DMC teams up with Aerosmith, for the song Walk This Way. The songs enter the charts of the top ten and it's the first time, rock meets rap, but definitely not the last.
