Learn about Kendo

Today, we have been lucky enough to come along and witness a Kendo and the Iaido practice session here in Kuching. These ancient Japanese martial arts are incredible to watch and give you a fantastic insight into the heart of Japanese culture.

Kendo translates to the way of the sword. And is practiced with the bamboos. And daily it's practiced in a dojo like this one here at Kuching. Practitioners must also wear specific protective armor. Kendo is not about attacking an opponent, rather the concept of Kendo is the difficult human character through the application and principles of the Katana which means sword in English.

The Iaido is different from Kendo, in that it's associated with the smooth and controlled movement of removing a katana from a scabbard. It teaches its practitioners mental presence and immediate reaction. The swords that they use for practice are blunt but we were lucky enough to be shown one Katana which was 700 years old and this one was very, very sharp.
