Drive systems based on natural gas are particularly, in demand in urban public transport and delivery operations. This is where natural gas powered vehicles for Mercedes-Benz have proved highly successful, thanks to their low operating costs and low emissions. This especially applies to the Citaro bus, which has already met the Euro IV Standard since 2003. The Citaro's natural gas engine develops up to 326 horse power. The Citaro has been demonstrating it's reliability in the public transport sector for years, all over Europe.
One of the most successful commercial vehicles available with natural gas power is the Sprinter, which has been in delivery service since 1996. It is for the Sprinter that Daimler has developed a special gas injection process known as Natural Gas Technology or NGT. A full charge of gas is enough for an operating range of 350 Kilometers. This can be considerably extended by choosing the option of a bi-fuel natural gas drive system.
The unit on which the system is based, a 1.8 L four-cylinder, can be operated on either natural gas or petrol. With this bi-fuel engine, the new Sprinter 316 NGT has an operating range of 1200 kilometers, well over 1000 units have been delivered to date.
Municipal vehicles in the Mercedes-Benz Econic NGT or CNG series. CNG stands for Compressed Natural Gas are equally successful. The NGT engine of the Econic has an output of 279 horse power. For the first time the Econic NGT is now also undergoing customer trials as a semi-trailer tractor. It is the use of natural gas as a fuel that gives all these commercial vehicles particular economic and emissions advantages.
Natural gas burns almost without any soot particles, not forgetting the acoustic benefit as natural gas also burns with very low noise. Mercedes Benz has also been able to use these benefits for it's E and B class passenger car series.
Take the former E200 NGT presented in 2004 for example. This E-class model is the most powerful series production Sedan, powered by natural gas, thanks to it's 163 horse power four-cylinder engine and bi-fuel drive. The driver decides between natural gas or premium petrol at the touch of a button. The same applies to the B 180 NGT, the latest addition to the natural gas line-up.
The total operating range of the B-class is around 1000 km, with a combined fuel consumption of 7.3 L of petrol and 4.3 kg of natural gas per 100 km. The natural gas B-class has been on sale to customers since 2008.
