Melanie Raposo: Hi everybody! I'm Melanie Raposo and welcome to Mommy's Minute. Dads beware! If you thought that PMS is difficult to deal with, you'd better brace yourself for PPMS, Postpartum Mood Swings and it affects three out of four new moms.
After your partner gives birth, her mood swings are completely out of wack and yes I know that's difficult to deal with, but following these three simple steps will make life easier on both of you.
First of all be a good listener. When guys hear problem they tend to try to fix it, of course that's logical but in this case it can backfire on you. Your partner doesn't want a plan of action, but a little comfort goes a long way. Secondly, if your partner is giving you some negative comments, do not take it too personally, it's not her talking it's her hormones. And also try to take your partner out for some fun. Isolation is one of the biggest factors contributing to PPMS.
The sooner she gets a change of scenery the quicker she'll come around. And also it's important to recognize that if these mood swings last longer than a month she should consult a doctor because she could be dealing with the bigger issue in hand Postpartum depression.
