Small and midsize businesses those with 10 to 1,000 employees are the life blood of the global economy. Roughly have of the worlds GTP comes from small and midsized business also known as SMB’s. Keeping an SMB running is a full time job, so it’s not surprised that IT security suffers from a lack of time and resources. To explore these challenges Symantec commissioned a study in the first quarter of 2009 of 1,425 SMB’s in 17 countries. The findings uncovered a striking SMB security gap.
The study showed clearly that SMB understand the cyber risk they face. They rated their top three concerns as viruses, spam and data breaches. Their top security goals protecting their information, servers and network, despite this awareness the study found that many are going without even basic proactive protection. For example three of five SMB do not employ any endpoint protection software that protects endpoints such as laptops, desktops and servers against Malware. Half do not backup their desktop PC’s leaving their important information at risk. And surprisingly 1/3 doesn’t even use virus protection. What's causing the striking SMB security gap? Time and money.
Being small SMB’s have undersized security budgets just $4,500.00 per year for the typical company. More importantly most do not have dedicated IT staff relaying instead on the owner or other employees to handle this important task in their spare time. SMB’s are aware of their limitations, siding a lack of employee skill, low budgets and time as three of their biggest security barriers.
However, the situation is far from hopeless. First, despite the global recession SMB security budgets are going up. Second, there are simple and effective safeguards.
