Hey! Welcome to watchmojo.com. I am your host Melissa and today Americans are celebrating Thanksgiving. Now, as you may know Americans and Canadians do not celebrate Thanksgiving on the same day and there is a perfectly good reason for that.
Now, unlike the American tradition of remembering the Pilgrims, Canadian give thanks for a successful harvest. Whereas, the Americans celebrate the success of the Pilgrims who came over on the Mayflower; and now aside from this little fact, Canadian and American Thanksgiving traditions are pretty much the same.
Now, it all started in March of 1621 when an Indian by the name of Somerset set foot on the Plymouth settlement of the pilgrims. Now, at first they were taken aback by this new visitor until they realized he spoke English, though he came back the next day with another Indian by the name of Squanto, who actually spoke more English than he did. Now, Squanto actually talked to them about their surroundings and how to survive. And because of him the pilgrims has a successful harvest.
Canadians give thanks for a successful harvest. Now, the Governor of the pilgrims, William Bradford, decided to celebrate and he invited Squanto, Somerset and other Indians to help them celebrate. And they came and celebrated for three straight days.
It was only after the Civil War that Thanksgiving became official in the US when President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the day of Thanksgiving at the end of 1863.
So, there you have it. Enjoy your holiday and all these traditions. Happy Thanksgiving!
