As the civil war dragged on casualties mounted. Northerners and southerners nursed wounded soldiers in hospitals and many took wounded soldiers into their homes.
So many soldiers died from lack of immediate medical care that Clara Barton, a volunteer nurse treated the wounded right on the battle field. In an effort to win the war, Lee invaded the North in 1863 but his advance ended at the battle of Gettysburg and he was forced to retreat.
Meanwhile Grant captured Pittsburg and union forces quickly control the entire Mississippi river. Given command of all union forces in 1864, Grant set out to end the war. He invaded Virginia, clashed over and over again with Lee and finally captured Richmond in 1865.
Meanwhile Union General William Tecumseh Sherman captured Atlanta then marched through Georgia and North and South Carolina destroying southerner’s resources and their will to fight. On April 9, 1865 after the fall of Richmond, Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court House ending the Civil War.
President Lincoln hope to create a just and lasting peace but he never got the chance. On April 14, 1865 he was shot by an assassin and died the next morning.
