Learn about The American Jeep in World War Two

The all-purpose runabout military vehicle was a new type that emerged during the Second World War and the American Jeep was the best known. It arose from a United States military requirement in 1940 for a small general purpose work horse for field reconnaissance and liaison. Production began in 1941 and over 600,000 have been built by the end of the war. The jeep was used by all services of the Allied nations in every theater of war and continued in service after 1945. Many specialized versions were produced including ambulances, long-range dessert patrol vehicles and an amphibious version. The Germans produced a similar type of vehicle, the Volkswagen built Kuebelwagen which also saw extensive service. Today the descendant of the war time jeep can still be seen in service demonstrating that this type of vehicle continues to have a distinctive role to play in the modern army.
