Learn about The Berlin Wall 1961 - 1989

At midnight on August 13, 1961 the East Germany began building an ominous barrier to divide the communist east from the capitalist west. Hundreds of thousands of East Germans were voting with their feet by walking into the west through Berlin. Erecting the Berlin wall was an act of desperation by Erich Honecker and Nikita Khrushchev. When the wall is finished, it was 28 miles long, 12 feet high and fortified with gun towers, mines and razor wire. In the two years that took to build the wall 16,000 East Berliners manage to escape. They jumped out of windows, dug tunnels and made the risky dash for freedom. But not everyone made it. The East German guards had a shoot to kill order and at least 68 people are known to have died trying to cross the wall. For the world the Berlin Wall was a concrete symbol of the Iron Curtain but for Berliners the wall symbolized the separation of families and friends.
