Male: Samuel Clemens was born near the Mississippi river in Florida Missouri on November 30, 1835. His family soon moved to Hannibal, the town he later immortalized in his classic novels, “Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.” Clemens took a job as printers apprentice after the death of his father and began reading voraciously and writing occasional articles for newspapers. He worked as a compositor and a writer of travel and humor pieces for papers in New York and the Midwest until the promise of gaining a fortune in South America lured him down the Mississippi by steamboat.

He fell in love with life on the big river and never made it South America, instead he became a river boat pilot.

Samuel Clemens: Over some years in Mississippi pilot, I’m familiarly know all the different kinds of steamboat men. A race of that and not like other folks, I still keep in mind a certain wonderful sense that which I witnessed when steamboat was new to me. I stood and bewitched and rank it in. the world was new to me and I have never seen anything like that at home.
