For centuries the rough wars of the English Channel had led politicians and engineers to dream of a tunnel connecting Great Britain and Europe. In 1987 work began in earnest to turn that dream into reality. Digging south, British miners encountered dry chalk marble and brought in giant laser guided boring machines. The French team digging from the opposites shore faced wet grounded pert and needed special dredging equipment. The project took a total of seven years cost 15 billion dollars and employed 15,000 workers. “That’s through, that’s the handshake we’ve all be waiting for.” But the opening of the channel tunnel in 1994, a dream of centuries came to pass. Thirty one miles long, the channel complex includes three parallel tunnels, a passage that was once the vain of would be invaders can now be made by car in half an hour.
