Learn about The Continental Drift - Plate Tectonics

Continental drift is a theory that the continents have shifted changing in both shape and location throughout the history of the earth. Geologists believe that more than 500 million years ago, there were six major continents spread out along the equator. Over the next 100 million years, the continents drifted together forming two new super continents. They continue to move until about 225 million years ago when they met and formed a single mass of continent. This super continent fragmented into new continents, which continue to move and reshape throughout the triadic, cretaceous and quaternary periods. Ultimately forming the continents, we know today.
