Male Speaker: There is a thing called FluMist. It's a flu vaccine, can you talk a little bit about that?
Michael Marcus: FluMist is a flu vaccine that's administered as a nose spray rather than as an injection. It is a cold and activated live virus. In other words, it takes the flu virus itself. It puts it through permutation so that it is inactivated, but still has all of the markers on the surface, and within the cell. So that our immune systems when it sees this virus will react as if it has a true flu infection, and create protected antivirus against that infection.
Male Speaker: What age groups are recommended for this?
Michael Marcus: It's approved for two years of age and up. You want to give it to children who don't have a history of asthma. If they have asthma or recurrent episodes of whizzing, we don't have studies to show whether these vaccine is safe or effective yet.
So we don't give it to that sub population. But all other children age 2 and up, can get this form of vaccine and by getting this form of vaccine, we protect them against influenza both of the same and different species, as well as sparing them a needle that they receive so many up in the doctors office, so many years.
