The German invasion on June the 22nd 1941 Operation Barbarossa was mounted over a huge front with three main thrusts; in the north towards Leningrad, in the center towards Moscow and in the south towards the Caucasus. At first the Germans advanced rapidly destroying whole Soviet Armies. In the center the Germans have reached the out skirts of Moscow and in the North started a prolong siege of Leningrad. It was in the south that the turning point of the war came with the battle of Stalingrad in January 1943 where the Germans suffered their first major defeat. The Soviet army won the biggest ever clash of armed forces, the battle of Kursk which took place in the summer of 1943. From this point onwards the Red army advanced in the series of thrusts extending from the Baltic to the Black Sea despite continuous and daggered to German resistance. These movements culminated in the battle for Berlin in April 1945. And the final collapse of Nazi Germany.
