Latin American dances are colorful, energetic, multi-textured and characterized by strong rhythms. The sources of Latin American dances are in the Native American, Spanish, and African traditions. Each of these groups contributed specific qualities, aesthetics and movement styles to the dances.
For example, in Mexico some dances stem from ritual dances of Huastec Indians. While some social dances displayed the proud, courage and bold rhythms of European Spanish dance. In the Andes mountains regions of Peru and Bolivia, dances blend indigenous traditions with both from the Spanish colonial era.
Many dances in Cuba and Brazil incorporate African influences. Such as the strongly rhythmic Rumba and Samba dances which have ritual and social versions. The Argentine Tango, a popular and elegant couple's dance using complex intertwining leg moments was further influenced by Eastern European cultures that immigrated to Buenos Aires in 18 century.
Other Latin American influence, urban social dances such as the Salsa, Mambo, and Merengue have become popular throughout the world.
