Formerly called Eskimos, the dogmatic Inuit people have survived in Canada’s frigid north land for thousands of years, but the survival of their ancient traditions and beliefs is threatened by influence from industry, government and other outsiders. To protect their culture, the 25,000 Inuit living in the Arctic radius of Canada have longed for self governance. In the early 1990s that dream was realized. According to a provincial agreement, an area was carved from the North West territories renamed Nunavut and turned over to the Inuit people in 1999.
