The Nile, enlarged into Lake Nasser by the Aswan High Dam further north, tarring above it, two monuments built during Egypt’s golden age more than three thousand years ago. They were carved out of a cliff for King Ramses II. He chose the location. Abu Simbel, a remote town in the southern most part of his empire in Nubia. Since ancient times, the anniversary of the succession to the throne has been a special day. It’s on February the twenty-second, the spring equinox, a time for celebrations. On that day and on the twenty-first of October, his birthday, the son picks out the statue of Ramses deep within its temple. For 20 minutes the race of the rising sun reach 61 meters into the sacred inner chamber of the Great temple twice a year, just to prove that Ramses is immortal.
