Learn about The Trans Alaska Pipeline

One of the boldest engineering projects in history, the 800 mile trans-Alaska pipe line took 3 years and 8 billion dollars to build. The construction was a hercurion task with sometimes over 28 thousand workers battling frigid temperatures and rugged frozen terrain. The trans-Alaska pipe line crosses 3 mountain ranges, more than half its length is buried in the earth. The rest is raised above ground to avoid thawing the permafrost soils below. Completed in 1977, the 4 foot diameter pipe line can transport more than 2 million barrels of crude per day from oil fields north of the Arctic Circle, south of Aldives on the Gulf of Alaska.
