Female: Hi everyone, welcome to LeGourmet TV. We’re here with Kevin at Alice Zooey’s and we’re going to be tasting through some value wines. I know we’re all looking for that great wine where we don’t have to spend a lot of money. So we’ll just sort of go through them and help you really understand that you can get some great wines at the $10.00 range from new world, we’ve got some great California and Australia wines here.
Kevin: Absolutely and that’s a great thing about this wines is that, you know especially with the holidays or just any time of the year, you certainly don’t have to break your budget to find a good wine, a good crowd pleaser we’re talking about. What you do is you look for wines like these in front of us, they’re very food friendly, they're approachable, they're easy drinking. Wines, you really don’t have to think a lot about.
Female: And I like those types of wines because you don’t want to have to think too much about it. You want to know what you like, how you want to share them, how you want to experience them and then share them with your friends and family.
Kevin: Absolutely, perfect time, perfect time to raise your glass to friends, family and holidays.
Female: Exactly. Well we’ve got a good wine up here and we’ve got a Pinot Grigio, we’ve got a chardonnay, and we’ve got a Cabernet Lowe so it will be a nice sort of blend to your—and like I said, all the wines under $10.00, so, very great. So, let’s start off with the Pinot Grigio.
Kevin: Okay, great!
Female: So we’ve got an E&J Gallo Pinot Grigio here, screw top, always good to open if you don’t know how to use a corkscrew.
Kevin: You have the Gallo family with 75 years of winemaking tradition and this one here at $9.00 a bottle is just an incredible value. You know, just the fruit is wonderful, nice and rich. You get some apple, it’s a nice peach to the wine and it’s just very crisp refreshing on the pallet.
Female: Amazing nose.
Kevin: But what I love about it is that it’s very crisp, very refreshing so with seafood, you know, it’s a perfect wine. That acidity, that crisp refreshing will cut through that. You know the oiliness, the fishiness, the saltiness and bring out the natural flavor of the fish, just like putting a squeeze of lemon on any kind of piece of seafood. So perfect for seafood.
Female: Good food. You're making me hungry here. Do you see another restaurant? All right, number two, we’ve got a Barefoot Chardonnay.
Kevin: Barefoot Chardonnay, Barefoot is a brand that’s just been wonderful across the world right now and it’s $10.00, you know it’s a great wine for a party, a crowd pleaser, can't go wrong. It’s what we call the fun wine. You know, has a great picture of a foot on there, it’s just about wine having fun, enjoying a great time with family and friends and that’s what this wine is all about.
Female: And Sherry, I know right away you obviously get a little bit of body. You can get some body to the chardonnay. What chardonnay naturally brings, which is why we tasted the Pinot Grigio first and moving on to the chardonnay. But chardonnay does have that body to withstand food which is always nice, a little bit of turkey, you know, just really nicely matches with a holiday meal in a lot of ways.
Kevin: Exactly. The fruit is—you would call the fruit, it’s nice and rich fruit so you got the apple in there, you got some nice peach flavors in there, a little bit of a honey overtone to the lime and it also has just a slight amount of oak aging to just give it a little bit more body, a little bit more complexity.
Female: Well this is really nice too. You can—I love how it just has that extra body to it. You can—right away the honey component you can taste right away but it’s got that really nice complexity to it.
Kevin: Yes, and being here, we’re sitting over here right before Christmas, perfect wine to go with turkey, you know because you have that extra body. Turkey has that extra—more wave, more richness more than chicken and so you want a white wine to go. If you're going to drink a lot of wine, you want a white wine with a little more body and this one worked perfect with it.
Female: And it’s $10.00.
Kevin: Exactly.
Female: $10.00, $10.00. and moving on to the Cab Merlot, this is an Australian Cab Merlot.
Kevin: It is. And again, great value for $10.00. The wine is called JJ McWilliams. McWiliiams has actually been around for 125 years now, since 1877 and it’s actually Australia’s most award-winning winery. So they make great wines whether at the $10.00 or in above. Today we’re concentrating on what they make at a nice value level, good for the holidays and you find a nice wine that has some decent body to it and you have wonderful fruit flavors, goes down easy, great holiday wine.
Female: Smells like—oh wow! It’s got a really nice nose on it. I can get a little bit of blueberry.
Kevin: Yup.
Female: A little bit of blueberry but it does have that you can sort of smell vaginas to it and then it’s going to leave your mouth nice and—
Kevin: Exactly. A little bit of tannins, you now whether you're having a turkey which will work well or something a little bit heavier, maybe a nice steak or prime rib for the holidays still will work well but you know, it’s the fruit that dominates this wine, you talk with the blueberries. There's some black in there, some wonderful plum flavors. So, if you like—
Female: A little bit of spice, just a little bit, not a lot but just a little bit, I think enough that would match really nicely with food.
Kevin: Yes, spice that comes from the oak barrels. I find spices just like, you know when you add a little bit of pepper to any dish, it just gives it a little bit more balance to the dish, a little more— and that’s what spice does in wine as well.
Female: Yeah. This is nice. Well, thank you Kevin. I think we all learned a lot about value wines which is nice, under $10.00, great value for anybody buying wines this holiday season or moving forward into a new year, sharing with friends and family, and even gifts.
Kevin: It’s always great to give a wine that over delivers for the price of wine.
Female: Yeah, that’s true. And it always saves you money which is good. Well cheers! Thanks very much Kevin.
Kevin: Cheers! Thanks for having you.
